Call an abort, ma'am.
This gubernatorial thing you're thinking about, 86 that. It's a no-go. This isn't the hill to die on.
And it would be the hill your political career dies on.
You've been in Congress 10 years, in a safe seat, and for the last several months you've been putting together a possible run for governor. Your plan was to finance and support local candidates across the state this year, and then announce your 2026 candidacy in the wake of the election.
Well, they had the election. And your party took an ass kicking. Here, there and everywhere. Those local candidates you were supporting, they mostly got blown up. Absolutely hammered. All across the state.
It was push back against Trump. Yes, the Democratic Party is much better managed in New York than is the Republican Party. Yes, Republican turnout lagged Democrat turnout. But let's not lie to ourselves -- this was about Trump.
I like him, you like him, he's doing some good things.
But he stepped in dog crap, and he's taking the stink with him. And if the electorate is this pissed after 10 months, imagine what it'll be like next year.
Next year, when New York voters hold their nose and vote in droves for the candidate who isn't Trump's lapdog.
Which means that, if you run, you are going to lose. You will be out of the House, you will not be governor, and your political career will be over.
Over.
And Trump will not save you. He threw you under the bus once, and he will throw you under the bus again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
You hitched your wagon to his star, you completely gave your support over to him, and when it came time to reward you, he cost you your House leadership post and he publicly humiliated you by reneging on the UN ambassador gig.
The smart move, if you want to stay in politics, is to hold on to your House seat, wait for the Trump years to pass, and re-emerge as a potential national leader. The unsmart move is to run for governor, get your ass kicked, and become a forgotten footnote.
Maybe, in that instance, you could sell out and become a lobbyist or something. Go to one of those think tanks or become one of the professional shouters on Fox.
And that may work for you.
But it doesn't work for us. And we -- the people of New York -- are naive enough to think this is about us.
Yes, it's a job for you. But for us it's deliverance from the malfeasance and tyranny of the Democratic Party, in Albany and in Washington.
We figure that the decade we've invested in you, in developing your skills and knowledge, is an investment we don't want to lose. We want you to put yourself in a position to be of continued use to us.
And that doesn't happen if you squander yourself in a run that will end in defeat.
So call an abort. Tell Trump he's got to get another patsy. Pay off the campaign people and send them on their way.
And live to fight another day.
Not because it suits you, but because it is in the best interest of the people.
