A significant milestone has been achieved in the Interstate 81 construction project in Cicero with the opening of a new $18 million flyover ramp. This development is part of a larger effort to modernize the highway system in Central New York. The ramp, which opened to traffic on Tuesday (May 13), allows for high-speed movement from the future Business Loop 81 northbound to Interstate 81 northbound, enhancing traffic flow and safety.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the completion of the ramp, which is a key component of the $2.25 billion I-81 Viaduct Project. The project aims to replace the aging elevated viaduct in downtown Syracuse with a more efficient and safer transportation network. The flyover ramp is part of the first phase of the project, which includes five contracts focusing on the reconstruction of the I-481/I-81 northern interchange.

According to Governor Hochul, the new infrastructure will help reconnect the City of Syracuse, alleviate congestion, and enhance mobility for commuters. New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez emphasized the project's importance in transforming transportation networks and improving safety in the region.

The I-81 Viaduct Project is part of a broader initiative to modernize New York State's infrastructure, supported by a mix of federal and state funding. The entire northern interchange is expected to be operational by the end of the year, with the project slated for completion by 2025. The new ramp is designed to allow for faster and safer traffic movement, reducing the risk of accidents caused by vehicles slowing down to merge.

As reported by Spectrum Local News, the construction of a second flyover bridge is also underway, which will further improve connectivity by allowing motorists to bypass downtown Syracuse. This project is expected to significantly enhance transportation efficiency and support economic growth in the region.
