Gerry McNamara, the new head coach of Syracuse University's men's basketball team, has appointed a familiar face to his coaching staff. Ryan Blackwell, a former Syracuse player, will take on the role of Director of Player Engagement. Blackwell previously worked alongside McNamara at Siena University for the past two seasons.

In his new position, Blackwell will serve as a key link between current players and the program's alumni. He will develop and support a comprehensive alumni and donor engagement strategy, ensuring all activities align with Syracuse's values and guidelines. Blackwell's responsibilities will include planning mentorship and networking opportunities, alumni weekends, and on-campus events.

Blackwell's connection to Syracuse runs deep. He played for the Orange from 1997 to 2000, starting all 100 games and scoring 1,175 points. He was named third team All-BIG EAST Conference as a senior. After his college career, Blackwell played professionally overseas for 10 years before transitioning to coaching. His coaching career includes a successful tenure at Liverpool High School, where he led the team to a state championship in 2018.

At Siena, Blackwell played a significant role in the team's improvement, contributing to a 23-12 record and a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament title. His experience and connection to Syracuse make him a valuable addition to McNamara's staff.
