Six people have been displaced following a fire at a two-family home on Bennington Drive in Syracuse. The incident occurred Thursday morning (April 9), when firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke and flames emanating from the back of the 2½-story home.
According to Syracuse.com, firefighters initially attacked the fire from inside to check for anyone trapped before moving outside to continue battling the flames. Fortunately, all occupants managed to exit safely, and no injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters.
The fire caused significant damage to the first and second floors, as well as the attic, primarily at the rear of the house. The flames did not reach the front of the house, but smoke and heat damage spread throughout the structure. The Syracuse Fire Department confirmed that the fire originated on the first-floor porch and classified it as accidental. However, the exact cause remains under investigation.
Fire crews managed to bring the fire under control in about 45 minutes. The American Red Cross is currently assisting the six displaced individuals.
