The Fulton City School District is confronting a $5 million budget shortfall for the 2026-2027 fiscal year, potentially leading to significant job cuts. The district's proposed $94.5 million budget may result in the elimination of 54 staff positions, including 30 instructional roles and one administrative position. Superintendent Douglas Lawrence emphasized the need to evaluate class sizes and elective offerings to determine specific cuts. He assured that no full programs would be eliminated.
To address the financial gap, the district has proposed a 2.85% tax increase. This would mean an additional $52 per year for a home valued at $100,000. Despite these measures, the district still faces challenges due to rising healthcare, gas, and electricity costs, which have surged by over 55% since the 2022-23 fiscal year. The district has been relying on reserve funds to cover these expenses, but this approach is not sustainable long-term.
The district is committed to maintaining strong educational programs and extracurricular activities, but reductions may be necessary if the budget is not approved. A public budget hearing is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., with a vote set for Tuesday, May 19, 2025. Community members are encouraged to participate and provide feedback.
CNY Central reports that last year, the district faced similar budget challenges, resulting in 59 staff cuts, although some positions were saved through reserve funds. The district is exploring further cost-saving measures, including reductions in general salary lines, supplies, and services.
