Gas prices in Central New York continue to rise as the national average for a gallon of gasoline surpasses $4, marking the first time since the summer of 2022. The increase comes as Americans return from Easter holiday travels and tensions in the Middle East persist. According to AAA, the national average is now $4.12, up 13 cents from last week.

In New York State, the average price per gallon is $4.07, a 14-cent increase from the previous week. AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports local averages as follows: Batavia at $3.98, Buffalo at $4.01, Elmira at $3.99, Ithaca at $4.00, Rochester at $4.04, Rome at $4.05, Syracuse at $4.01, and Watertown at $4.10.

The rise in gas prices is largely attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly the U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran, which have disrupted oil supplies. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. will continue its military actions in Iran, causing crude oil prices to soar. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil trade, has seen restricted shipping traffic, further exacerbating the situation.

As the conflict continues, experts predict that gas prices may remain high. AAA suggests motorists conserve fuel by mapping routes, avoiding peak traffic times, and combining errands. Meanwhile, the inflationary impact of rising energy costs is a concern for both consumers and the stock market, as noted by analysts.
