The Bear Street on-ramp to Interstate 690 westbound in Syracuse is closed for about one month as part of ongoing work on the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project. The New York State Department of Transportation began the closure at 7 a.m. on Monday (March 30), with crews making needed modifications to the ramp. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, the closure is expected to last through late April, depending on weather conditions.

Drivers are advised to follow the posted detour, which routes traffic west on Spencer Street, then west on State Fair Boulevard, before merging onto Interstate 690 westbound. The department encourages drivers to allow extra travel time and to drive carefully through work zones, as fines for speeding are doubled and repeat violations can result in license suspension. For the latest updates on traffic and travel conditions, drivers can visit 511NY.org or use the 511NY mobile app.

The work is part of a larger effort to improve infrastructure in Syracuse through the I-81 Viaduct Project, which is likely to cause additional changes and closures in the future. Construction schedules may change due to weather, and further announcements will be provided by the Department of Transportation. More information about the project and road closures can be found on the CNY Central website and NewsBreak’s Syracuse Daily Brief.
