The Syracuse Mets are beginning their 2026 season on the road Friday (March 27), facing the Worcester Red Sox at Polar Park in Worcester, Massachusetts. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m., marking a much-anticipated Opening Day for both Triple-A clubs.

On the mound for Syracuse is right-hander Jonah Tong, one of the Mets' top pitching prospects. Tong was recently optioned to Triple-A after a competitive spring and is seen as a major part of the Mets’ future rotation plans. According to MLB.com, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said, "He’s a big part of what we’re trying to do here. Just go down there and continue to develop." Tong will look to build on lessons from last year’s short stint in the majors, where he posted a 7.71 ERA over five starts but gained valuable experience.

Facing him is left-hander Jake Bennett, making his debut for the Worcester Red Sox. As reported by Mass Live, Bennett’s first start comes with high expectations, as both teams feature players aiming to earn spots on their respective big league rosters. Worcester’s roster includes several prospects and veterans vying for attention from the Boston Red Sox, while Syracuse’s lineup is highlighted by players like Ronny Mauricio, MJ Melendez, and veteran closer Craig Kimbrel.

Fans at Polar Park can expect more than just baseball. Opening Day festivities include a photo giveaway, an appearance by former MLB pitcher Roger Clemens, and postgame fireworks set to Boston Red Sox music.

For the Mets, this road series is only the beginning, with the team’s home opener scheduled for Tuesday (March 31) against the Toledo Mud Hens. As SNY notes, Tong sees Triple-A as a crucial development stage: "You’re gonna have days where you’re going to absolutely carve, and other days you’re going to get your teeth kicked in. And being able to stay the same person through it all is probably the most important thing."

Both clubs enter the season with a mix of rising prospects and seasoned veterans, looking to prove themselves in front of packed crowds and under the pressure of high organizational expectations. The game marks the start of what both franchises hope will be a successful campaign, launching the next wave of talent toward the major leagues.
