The City of Syracuse Department of Engineering is inviting residents to a public meeting to discuss the upcoming rehabilitation of the South Avenue Bridge over Onondaga Creek. The meeting will be held Tuesday (March 24) from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Seals Community Center at Kirk Park, located at 300 W. Borden Ave, according to details shared by the city.

Mayor Sharon Owens said the project is part of an ongoing effort to maintain and improve Syracuse's infrastructure. "Investing in our infrastructure is critical to keeping Syracuse connected and safe," Mayor Owens said. "Rehabilitating the South Avenue bridge will help preserve this important route, improve safety for pedestrians and drivers, and ensure the structure continues serving the community for years to come," as reported by CNYCentral.

Planned improvements include replacing the bridge bearings and pedestals, rebuilding sidewalks and curbs, repairing masonry joints and concrete supports, sealing the bridge deck, and painting the existing girders. The South Avenue Bridge, originally constructed in 1896 and previously rehabilitated in 1971 and 1995, serves as a key connection in the city.

Residents who cannot attend in person can submit online comments through April 10. Additional project information and options for submitting feedback are available at syr.gov/south-ave-bridge.

The city encourages community members to participate as it finalizes plans for the bridge's rehabilitation and works toward long-term infrastructure improvements.
