The New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) is warning drivers in Syracuse about lane closures on Interstate 81 southbound as part of the I-81 Viaduct Project. The highway will be reduced to one lane on weekdays between Exits 23A-23B-22 and Exit 20.

According to CNY Central, the closures will happen from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday through Friday, April 3. Crews will be working in the area to demolish the Court Street bridge as part of ongoing improvements to the highway.

Officials from the NYS DOT say the schedule may change based on weather conditions, so drivers should stay alert for updates. The department urges motorists to slow down and use caution in construction zones. Under New York law, fines for speeding in work zones are doubled, and drivers who receive two or more work zone speeding tickets may have their driver's license suspended.

The NYS DOT recommends planning ahead and allowing extra travel time while the lane closures are in effect. The work is expected to help improve traffic flow and safety in the Syracuse area once the project is complete.
