New details have emerged about the fatal fire at Nob Hill Apartments in Syracuse. The blaze broke out early Saturday (February 28) morning, resulting in two deaths and leaving over 50 people displaced. Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens announced legal action against the apartment's owners, citing neglect in maintaining the property.

The fire, which began in Building 3 at 211 Lafayette Road, was fueled by 30 mph wind gusts and a heavy load of flammable materials, including furniture and automotive parts. Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds described the conditions as "wind-driven blowtorch," making it difficult for occupants to escape. Firefighters rescued 11 people, including a family of six, and two individuals were hospitalized with non-critical injuries.

The Nob Hill complex has a history of code violations, some dating back 686 days. Mayor Owens, alongside city officials, is pursuing further legal action, including seeking receivership, to address the ongoing issues. The property, owned by California-based Windsor Capital Group, is facing foreclosure, with over $50 million owed and hundreds of thousands in fines.

The fire's aftermath revealed a second deceased individual in a separate bathroom, but authorities have not confirmed if the fire caused the death. Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin stated the investigation is ongoing.

Residents have long reported issues such as broken elevators, unsecured doors, and inadequate heating. The city is committed to ensuring safe living conditions and holding the property owners accountable. The American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter for displaced residents at Onondaga Community College.
