In Central New York, drivers are experiencing a slight increase in gas prices. As of today, the average cost for a gallon of regular fuel is $2.98, which is two cents higher than last week and also two cents more than a month ago. According to AAA, the state average is now $3.00 per gallon, while the national average stands at $2.98.

The rise in gas prices can be attributed to several factors. Refineries are transitioning to the production of summer-blend gasoline, which includes more expensive additives to prevent evaporation. Additionally, recent U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran could disrupt global oil exports, leading to further increases. Although the U.S. does not purchase oil from Iran, major buyers such as China and India do, which affects global prices. Oil prices have surged between 9% and 13% following the conflict.

Despite these increases, AAA reports that gas prices across New York State have generally been trending lower, with the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline now at $3.03, down two cents from last Monday. This decrease is attributed to strong fuel supplies, the seasonal switch to cheaper winter-blend gasoline, and lower oil prices, which are currently trading in the mid-$50 to $60 per barrel range.

As the spring season approaches, drivers may see continued fluctuations in gas prices. AAA recommends motorists plan routes, avoid peak traffic times, and combine errands to conserve fuel.
