Salina residents will need to choose a new town supervisor this November as current supervisor Raul Herta has announced he will not seek re-election.

Herta, a 75-year-old Democrat who scored an upset victory against Republican Nick Paro last year, cited the time-consuming nature of the position as his reason for stepping down after completing his one-year term.

"The role is taking up a lot of my time," Herta explained in his announcement to Salina residents.

The upcoming election has already seen both major parties select their candidates. Democrats have nominated Heidi McElwee to run for the position, while Republicans have selected David Stott as their candidate.

Herta's decision comes just months after being sworn in, making his tenure as Salina's town supervisor particularly brief. The November election will determine who will next lead this New York town's local government.
