Cleanup efforts are ongoing in Syracuse, following a recent winter storm that left the area blanketed in snow. Onondaga County recorded the highest snowfall total, with just over 18 inches, while Syracuse saw nearly eight inches of precipitation. The storm system moved out on Monday (January 26), but a new lake effect snow warning has been issued for Oswego County, lasting from today through Thursday morning (January 29).

According to the National Weather Service, Oswego County could receive up to two feet of snow in areas where persistent snow bands linger. The snow bands are expected to oscillate north and south multiple times, bringing changeable conditions and allowing for cleanup between rounds of snow.

The Democrat and Chronicle reports that snowfall rates could reach up to five inches per hour in the most affected areas, with wind gusts up to 35 mph creating near-whiteout conditions. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, as roads may become treacherous and potentially life-threatening.

The lake effect snow warning also extends to Jefferson and Lewis counties, with dangerous wind chills accompanying the heavy snow. Wind chill values could drop to 15 to 20 degrees below zero in higher terrains.
