A chemical containment breach occurred at the City of Syracuse Water Treatment Plant in Skaneateles on Thursday (January 22). The breach was swiftly contained within the building, preventing any chemicals from reaching nearby streets, waterways, or sewer systems. Emergency shutdown systems were activated to manage the situation effectively.

Emergency responders secured the outside areas of the facility before entering and clearing the building, allowing operations staff to re-enter safely. The incident led to a temporary road closure on a portion of Genesee Street.

The Village of Skaneateles expressed gratitude to the emergency personnel and employees for their quick and efficient response. The water treatment plant, located at 26 Fennell Street, continues to operate normally following the containment of the breach.
