Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that Oswego is a strong candidate for a new nuclear power plant. The New York Power Authority is in the process of selecting sites for one or more nuclear reactors to generate one gigawatt of power. Oswego County officials have expressed interest, citing their extensive experience with nuclear facilities and existing infrastructure that could support expansion.

During a recent interview, Governor Hochul emphasized the safety and technical advancements of modern nuclear reactors. She stated, "The new reactors we’re talking about, they’re not your grandfather’s nuclear energy. The facilities are so safe, so technically advanced that we feel very comfortable about that." Oswego's history with nuclear energy and its skilled workforce make it a prime candidate for the project.

The governor's plan aims to expand New York's nuclear capacity by five gigawatts, as outlined in her State of the State address. Other regions, including Broome, Jefferson, Schuyler, St. Lawrence, and Wayne counties, as well as the City of Dunkirk and RED-Rochester, have also expressed interest in hosting nuclear facilities.
