The New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) has outlined the next steps for the ongoing Interstate 81 Viaduct project in Syracuse. Crews will focus on completing bridges connecting the highway to Interstate 481 and constructing a new I-81 off-ramp to East Colvin Street. The total construction cost is expected to exceed $2 billion.

The project aims to replace the elevated highway with a surface-level community grid. By the end of 2026, part of the elevated I-81 through downtown Syracuse will be permanently closed. The state plans to begin tearing down the southern stretch of the highway at the end of 2026, with the rest of the viaduct coming down in 2027 and 2028, according to Syracuse.com.

The project is at its midpoint, with significant progress already made. New ramps and bridges have opened, enhancing connectivity and access to key areas like the Northside and Inner Harbor. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the project's goal of strengthening community connections and improving transportation infrastructure in Central New York, as reported by Governor Hochul's official website.

The I-81 Viaduct Project is part of a broader effort to modernize New York State's infrastructure, funded by a mix of federal and state resources. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with ongoing improvements to the Northside and Inner Harbor.
