The highly anticipated groundbreaking ceremony for Micron Technology's massive semiconductor project is set to take place today (January 16) in Clay. The ceremony will occur at 1 p.m. at the project site located at the corner of Route 31 and Caughdenoy Road. This project, valued at $100 billion, marks the largest private investment in New York state history. Micron plans to build up to four semiconductor fabrication facilities, with the first expected to open in 2030.
The project faced delays due to an extended environmental review, but it has now received the necessary permits and approvals to proceed. The groundbreaking ceremony will feature Micron Chairman, President, and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, along with officials from the Trump administration, Congress, and New York state and local government, as reported by Micron.
Micron's investment is expected to create up to 9,000 jobs over the next 20 years, with an additional 40,000 jobs anticipated from supply chain companies and other employers attracted to the area. The Clay Planning Board recently approved the site plan, clearing the way for construction to begin. The company plans to start clearing trees from the site within days to accommodate the endangered Indiana bat's nesting season.
The project is backed by $20 billion in federal subsidies and $2 billion in tax breaks from the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency. As the global economy enters the AI era, Micron's advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility will play a crucial role in innovation and economic prosperity, according to Construction Dive.
