The New York Democratic Committee will hold its upcoming convention in Syracuse on February 8 at the Carrier Theater inside the Mulroy Civic Center. This marks the first time since 1982 that Syracuse will host the event. Political leaders from across the state will gather to decide on party endorsements for key positions, including governor, attorney general, comptroller, and state legislature seats.

Jay Jacobs, chair of the New York State Democratic Committee, emphasized the importance of convening in different regions to demonstrate the party's commitment to the entire state. According to Syracuse.com, the convention will precede the petitioning period for candidates seeking to secure spots on the primary ballots.

The convention comes at a pivotal time, with all four statewide offices—governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and comptroller—up for election. Incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul is preparing for re-election, while her current lieutenant governor, Antonio Delgado, plans to challenge her for the party nomination. Meanwhile, Republicans had been rallying around Congresswoman Elise Stefanik as their gubernatorial candidate until she announced that she was suspending her campaign in December.

As reported by Politics and Stuff, the state party conventions will designate candidates for these offices, although others may qualify for a primary through petitioning. The petition process requires 15,000 valid signatures, with specific distribution requirements across congressional districts.

The upcoming elections will be closely watched, with primary elections scheduled for June 23 and the general election on November 3. Early voting for the general election will take place from October 24 to November 1.
