A groundbreaking ceremony for Micron Technology's new chipmaking complex will take place on Friday (January 16) at the White Pine Commerce Park in Clay. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, a member of President Trump's cabinet, will be among the attendees. Lutnick's department will oversee up to $20 billion in taxpayer subsidies for the project, which is part of the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act.
Micron's new facility is expected to be the largest semiconductor manufacturing site in the United States, with plans for up to four fabrication plants, or "fabs," to be built over the next 20 years. According to Micron, the project will cost an estimated $100 billion and create 50,000 jobs in the region.
Micron Chairman, President, and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra expressed gratitude to President Trump, Secretary Lutnick, and other officials for their support in reaching this milestone. "Breaking ground at Micron’s New York megafab is a pivotal moment for Micron and the United States," Mehrotra said.
The project faced delays due to an extensive environmental review, but Micron has now secured the necessary permits to begin construction. The first factory is expected to open in 2030, with subsequent factories following in 2033 and beyond. The groundbreaking ceremony will be followed by a celebration program at Syracuse University’s National Veterans Resource Center, where executives and officials will provide remarks.
