Micron Technology has announced the groundbreaking ceremony for its new chipmaking complex in Clay set for January 16 at 1 p.m. The event will take place at the project site located at the corner of Route 31 and Caughdenoy Road. According to Micron's CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, "Breaking ground at Micron’s New York megafab is a pivotal moment for Micron and the United States."

Micron plans to construct up to four factories, with a total investment of $100 billion. The first factory is expected to open in 2030, followed by the second in 2033. The entire project aims to employ 9,000 people by the time the fourth factory is completed in 2045. The demand for Micron's chips, which are essential for data centers and artificial intelligence, has been increasing.

The project was initially announced over three years ago, with construction slated to begin in mid-2024. However, the timeline was delayed due to a lengthy 20,000-page environmental review. As reported by My News 13, the first step in the construction process involves clearing hundreds of acres of trees by March 31, to avoid disturbing endangered bats that roost on the site.

Micron has secured most of the necessary state and local permits, but is still awaiting federal approvals. The company could receive over $25 billion in taxpayer subsidies for the first two factories. Additionally, Micron plans to build a rail spur to transport the 9 million cubic yards of fill needed to level the site.
