The highway supervisor in Sandy Creek is urging residents to remain patient as crews continue to clear roads following a massive lake effect snowstorm. The town was hit with nearly five feet of snow over several days, with three feet falling between Thursday and Friday (January 1). According to CNY Central, Sandy Creek Highway Supervisor Michael Kastler described the snowfall as unprecedented, noting that the town usually experiences lake effect snow, but not at such a rapid pace.

To tackle the snow, the town has deployed two loaders, a tractor, and an excavator to clear streets and around 75 fire hydrants. Residents are advised to ensure their mailboxes are visible and not at risk of damage during snow removal operations. The Oswego County Highway Department is also involved in the cleanup efforts, using a large snowblower to clear and widen roads in Sandy Creek and nearby Lacona. Oswego County officials have asked drivers to exercise caution around snow removal equipment and to follow safety precautions.

Residents, like Donald Burnett, have been using snow blowers to manage the heavy snowfall, helping neighbors who are unable to clear their driveways. Burnett, who has a prosthetic leg, shared with WWNY that he helps maintain driveways for those in need, including a neighbor with an autistic child. Despite the challenges, community members are working together to manage the aftermath of the storm.
