Two Central New York communities, Cortland and Fulton, will benefit from the New York Statewide Investment in More Swimming (NY SWIMS) initiative, receiving a portion of the $67 million allocated to improve swimming facilities across the state. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the funding, which aims to provide New Yorkers with safe and modern swimming environments.
Cortland will receive over $3 million to renovate the Yaman Park swimming facility. The project includes constructing a new ADA-accessible bathhouse, improving beach access, and adding shade structures and pavilions for year-round use. Similarly, the YMCA in Fulton is set to receive more than $3 million for upgrades to its therapeutic pool, sauna, and locker room facilities, enhancing accessibility and safety.
The NY SWIMS initiative, administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), provides matching grants to municipalities and nonprofit organizations to modernize aquatic infrastructure. The program supports projects that build or upgrade swimming pools, natural swimming areas, and related facilities, with a focus on community need and public benefit.
Governor Hochul emphasized the transformative impact of safe swimming facilities on families and neighborhoods, stating, "This next round of awards continues that progress by giving more communities the resources they need to build and improve the pools and aquatic spaces that support health, safety, and year-round recreation." The initiative is part of the broader "Unplug and Play" effort, encouraging families to stay active and enjoy outdoor activities.
As part of the second round of NY SWIMS funding, over $200 million has been awarded to support 57 projects across New York State. The program aims to address gaps in recreation infrastructure and increase opportunities for water-safety education and youth programming.
