Motorists in Central New York are experiencing relief at the gas pump as prices continue to decline heading into the new year. According to AAA, the average cost for a gallon of regular fuel in the region is now $3.01, marking a two-cent decrease from the previous week and an eight-cent drop compared to a month ago. Statewide, the average gas price is slightly higher at $3.05 per gallon, while the national average stands at $2.82.

The drop in gas prices comes as a welcome relief for holiday travelers. AAA reports that 109.5 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday period from December 20 to January 1, a 2 percent increase from last year. Despite the increased demand, gas prices have remained below $3 since early December, making this the cheapest December at the pump since 2020.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration notes that state gas prices have decreased for the second consecutive week, with the current average at $2.99 per gallon, down from $3.02 last week. The steady decline in prices is attributed to strong supply levels, even as gasoline demand rises during the holiday season.

Diesel prices are also on the decline, with the national average at $3.55, down four cents from the previous week. In New York, the average diesel price is $3.89, a one-cent drop from last week.

As the new year approaches, drivers in Central New York can expect to continue benefiting from lower fuel costs, easing the financial burden of holiday travel and everyday commutes.
