New data reveals a significant surge in flu cases across Central New York, with Onondaga County reporting 502 infections during the week ending December 13, followed by Oswego County with 297 cases and Oneida County with 211. Statewide, over 113,000 flu cases have been confirmed since the season began in October.
According to the Oswego County Health Department, flu cases in New York increased by nearly 80% in late November. Oswego County Supervising Public Health Nurse Jennifer Purtell noted that flu activity is unpredictable, and cases are expected to continue rising. She emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated to protect against the flu during holiday gatherings.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald declared influenza prevalent across New York, mandating that unvaccinated healthcare workers wear masks in patient areas. He reiterated that the flu vaccine is the best defense against infection and can lessen symptoms if contracted. The New York State Department of Health reported a 114% increase in flu cases outside New York City and a 119% rise within the city in late November.
Local health departments, such as Oneida County, offer information on flu clinics, and vaccines are available at pharmacies and healthcare providers. For more details, visit vaccines.gov to find an immunization clinic near you.
