A second person has died following a devastating fire at the Countryside Apartments on Rome-Oriskany Road in Rome. The fire broke out early Tuesday morning (December 9), resulting in the death of one person at the scene and critically injuring another. The injured woman, who was severely burned, was initially taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica and later transferred to Upstate University Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.
The fire, which displaced approximately 20 people, required the response of multiple fire departments due to challenging conditions, including freezing weather. Firefighters continued to battle hotspots and flare-ups throughout the day. One firefighter sustained a hand injury during the efforts.
The American Red Cross has opened a reception and warming center at All Saints Parish in Rome to assist those displaced by the fire. The organization anticipates providing shelter for 10 to 15 individuals overnight and will continue to support affected families in the coming days. Donations to Disaster Relief can be made through the Red Cross website or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
Authorities, including the Rome Fire Department, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, and the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control, are investigating the cause of the fire. CNY Central reports that the charred remains of the apartment complex were demolished on the evening of the fire.
