Faulty wiring is being blamed for a fire that broke out in an apartment above Recess Coffee in Syracuse. The fire occurred on Sunday night (December 7), prompting first responders to the scene on Ulster Avenue. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but one person was displaced due to the incident.
According to the Syracuse Fire Department, the fire originated in the second-floor wall and ceiling cavity of the apartment, and investigators have ruled the incident accidental. The fire caused significant water damage to the Recess Coffee shop below, leading to its temporary closure. In an Instagram post, the coffee shop announced it would remain closed through Tuesday (December 9) as fire remediation crews work to address the damage.
WSYR-TV reported that the fire was called in around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, finding smoke and fire emanating from the second-floor apartment. It took about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames.
Syracuse.com noted that the coffee shop suffered from water damage as water from firefighting efforts seeped through the floor. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but faulty wiring has been identified as a contributing factor.
The Recess Coffee team has promised to keep the public updated on when they will resume operations at their Tipperary Hill location.
