Bitter cold weather is sweeping across Central New York today, with temperatures plunging into the single digits overnight and some areas experiencing below-zero conditions. The high for today is expected to reach only about 25 degrees. Residents are advised to dress warmly, wearing layers and appropriate footwear such as boots, to protect against the frigid conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, warning of potential snow accumulations of two to four inches, particularly affecting Northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, and Genesee counties. The advisory, which was updated early Tuesday morning, is in effect until 7 p.m. According to the weather service, the snow will peak in intensity during the morning commute, leading to snow-covered and slippery roads with reduced visibility.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution, slow down, and use safety measures when traveling. The weather service emphasizes the importance of preparing vehicles for winter conditions, including ensuring a full gas tank and carrying essential supplies like a windshield scraper, jumper cables, and extra warm clothing. In case of being stranded, it is advised to stay calm and signal for assistance without attempting to walk to safety.

For those venturing out, it is recommended to check current road conditions and avoid routes with heavy tree cover or power lines, as ice accumulation can pose hazards. The latest weather alerts and forecasts can be heard on NewsRadio 570 WSYR.
