A federal grand jury is considering a second set of criminal charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James. This comes after a judge dismissed initial charges last month. James, a prominent critic of President Donald Trump, faces allegations of bank fraud and lying to a financial institution for allegedly misleading on mortgage documents to secure better loan terms.

The Justice Department's renewed attempt to prosecute James follows the dismissal of the previous case due to the unlawful appointment of the prosecutor, Lindsey Halligan. The judge, Cameron McGowan Currie, allowed the Justice Department to seek a new indictment with a different prosecutor, as reported by US News.

James is one of three high-profile Trump critics facing federal charges recently, alongside former FBI Director James Comey and former national security adviser John Bolton. The initial charges against James were dismissed as a vindictive prosecution brought at Trump's behest, according to Reuters.

James has pleaded not guilty to the charges. She previously brought a civil fraud case against Trump and his family business, resulting in a significant penalty, which was later overturned by a New York state appeals court. Both Trump and James' office are appealing to the state's highest court.
