The Syracuse City Auditor, Alexander Marion, has issued a warning to private snowplow contractors operating without a license in the city. According to Marion, no licenses have been issued this year, despite a city ordinance that requires contractors to obtain a license before engaging in snow removal activities. The fine for operating without a license starts at $150 and can increase to $350 for repeat offenses.

Contractors seeking a license must pay a $50 annual fee for their first piece of equipment and an additional $10 for each subsequent piece. They must also provide proof of insurance and compliance with New York State Department of Motor Vehicles safety regulations. Marion emphasized the importance of the ordinance, stating, "Having this ordinance on the books ensures that qualified operators can safely perform this work and provides the public additional assurance that they are hiring properly insured contractors."

The city also offers educational seminars for snowplow drivers. Attending these seminars can reduce the license fee from $50 to $10 for that year. The ordinance aims to ensure safe and reliable snow removal services in Syracuse, especially as snow continues to fall frequently in the area.

For more information on the licensing process, contractors can visit the city's website. Marion's warning comes after an audit revealed low compliance with the snowplowing ordinance, and the city seeks to improve adherence to these regulations to protect both contractors and residents.
