The design phase for a $450 million hospital annex at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse is set to commence. The project, which will include a new and expanded emergency department and a modern burn unit, aims to enhance healthcare services in the Central New York region. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the project's funding, which was proposed by the SUNY Board of Trustees and approved as part of the 2026 state budget.

The annex will significantly expand the hospital's capacity, adding between 55 and 75 bays to the emergency department and introducing a new burn unit with six to eight ICU beds, along with additional operating rooms. According to Upstate Medical's President, Dr. Mantosh Dewan, the redesign will provide a state-of-the-art facility to serve the community for generations.

Cannon Design Architecture and Engineering will lead the design work, collaborating with various subconsultants, many of which are Minority Owned or Women Owned Business Enterprises and Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Businesses.

The project has received widespread support from local and statewide labor organizations and the Central New York State Legislative delegations. Updates on the construction timeline and further developments will be provided as the design process progresses.
