The Syracuse University men's basketball team experienced its first loss of the season in a close game against the third-ranked Houston Cougars on Monday (November 24) in Las Vegas. The Orange fought hard but ultimately fell 78-74 in overtime at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Tyler Betsey led Syracuse with 16 points, while William Kyle III contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Syracuse's performance was notable, especially given the absence of their leading scorer, Donnie Freeman, who averages 17.8 points per game. Despite missing Freeman, the Orange managed to push Houston to overtime, thanks to a late 11-0 run that included a crucial three-pointer by Betsey to tie the game with 55 seconds left. However, a key three-pointer by Houston's Emanuel Sharp in overtime helped secure the win for the Cougars.
The Orange struggled with free-throw shooting, making only 12 of 29 attempts, which was a significant factor in their loss. Despite the defeat, Syracuse showed resilience and determination, aiming to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021. The team, now 4-1, will face the Kansas Jayhawks next in the Players Era tournament, with the game airing on TNT at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time.
The Orange's effort against Houston highlighted contributions from various players, including freshman Kiyan Anthony, who scored 10 points. Syracuse hopes to build on this performance as they continue the tournament.
