Le Moyne College in Syracuse is set to introduce a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics starting in the fall of 2026. This new program aims to prepare students for careers in emerging fields such as semiconductors, sensors, and renewable energy systems, aligning with the anticipated arrival of Micron Technology in Central New York.

According to Le Moyne College, the program will provide students with advanced, hands-on training in semiconductor physics, electronic materials, and materials science. These fields are experiencing significant growth both nationally and regionally. The college emphasizes that the program will integrate ethical scientific conduct and inquiry into its curriculum, offering personalized mentoring, advanced labs, and research opportunities.

Christopher Bass, chair of Le Moyne’s Physics Department, described the program as a place "where scientific curiosity meets hands-on innovation." Students will gain practical skills in data acquisition, instrumentation, and experimental design, which are highly valued by employers.

The introduction of this program comes as Micron Technology plans to begin construction at the White Pine Commerce Park in Clay. Micron's investment, estimated to reach up to $100 billion over the next 20 years, is expected to create thousands of jobs in the region. As a result, students trained in applied physics and semiconductor technology will be in high demand for internships and full-time roles with Micron and its suppliers.

This new major reflects Le Moyne's commitment to educating ethical, forward-thinking scientists and innovators, addressing both regional workforce needs and student interest in high-demand fields.
