Four former corrections officers are appearing in court today (November 21) in Utica for their roles in the death of inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility. Nicholas Anzalone and Anthony Farina, who pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, are facing 22-year prison sentences. They admitted that their assault on Brooks, captured on bodycam video, led to his death.

Michael Mashaw and David Walters also pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Mashaw will serve between three and nine years, while Walters will serve between two and one-third years and seven years. Walters admitted to neglecting his duty to intervene and instructed a nurse not to enter the room during the assault. Walters attempted to withdraw his guilty plea but was denied by Judge Robert Bauer.

The incident occurred on December 9, 2024, when Brooks was transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy Correctional Facility. Bodycam footage showed officers punching, kicking, and grabbing Brooks by the neck. He died the following day at 43 years old. Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence for assault, with a scheduled release in 2026.

A total of 10 officers were charged in connection with Brooks' death. David Kingsley, another officer, was convicted of murder and manslaughter in October, while co-defendants Mathew Galiher and Nicholas Kieffer were acquitted of murder charges.
