Syracuse Hancock International Airport is ready for the busy holiday travel season following the completion of an 18-month terminal expansion project. The project, which concluded just in time for the holidays, added three new gates, more seating, and additional charging stations to accommodate increasing passenger numbers. According to the airport's Executive Director Jason Terreri, these improvements were based on feedback from travelers who highlighted the need for more space and charging options.
The expansion was supported by a $20 million grant from the New York State Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. This funding also contributed to upgrades at the airport's Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Station, enhancing its capacity to process international arrivals.
Passenger numbers at Syracuse Airport have remained steady in 2025, despite the departure of Southwest Airlines from the market last year. The airport has adjusted by increasing flights to popular destinations, such as Fort Lauderdale, with Allegiant Air adding more flights during peak travel months.
Travelers are advised to arrive at least two hours before their flight to ensure a smooth experience, especially with the new changes in place. The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority encourages passengers to double-check their departure gates as flights may be relocated due to the recent expansions.
