Central New York is set to receive $9.28 million to upgrade its bus fleet to low and zero-emission vehicles. Announced by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand on Tuesday (November 18), the funding is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is awarded through the Federal Transit Administration’s FY25–26 Low or No Emission Grant Program and the FY25 Buses & Bus Facilities Program.

The grant is part of a larger $100 million initiative aimed at modernizing bus fleets and improving urban mobility across New York State. According to CNY Central, the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority will use the funds to invest in cleaner buses, which will enhance service for riders and contribute to reducing emissions in the community.

Senator Gillibrand emphasized the importance of these investments in building cleaner, more reliable transportation systems. She stated, "These investments will modernize bus fleets, improve service for riders, and help reduce emissions in communities across the state." Senator Charles Schumer also highlighted the significance of this funding, noting that it will support the purchase of low-pollution, hybrid buses and contribute to smoother commutes in cities like Syracuse.

The funding aims to support the purchase or lease of low- and zero-emission buses, as well as the rehabilitation and modernization of transit facilities. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that New York's transit agencies have the necessary resources to provide safe and sustainable transportation options for residents.
