Work is set to begin soon on the new Onondaga Hotel in downtown Syracuse following the recent approval by the Syracuse Planning Commission. The 10-story hotel, developed by Indianapolis-based Sun Development, will be located at the corner of South Warren Street and East Fayette Street. This $87 million project marks the largest hotel development in downtown Syracuse since 2013.
The Planning Commission's approval allows developers to proceed with the demolition of an old parking garage on the site, paving the way for construction. The project was initially announced in January, with hopes of opening by summer 2027. However, due to budget and financial adjustments, the opening is now expected by the end of 2027, as reported by Syracuse.com.
The approval process was not without challenges. During the planning phase, concerns were raised by neighbors about drainage and design issues. Despite these concerns, the Planning Commission decided to move forward with the project, as noted by Citizen Portal.
Developers are expected to engage with the community to address these concerns, particularly regarding easements, cabling, and traffic, as highlighted in a previous meeting documented by Citizen Portal.
The Onondaga Hotel project is anticipated to boost the local economy and enhance the city's hospitality offerings once completed.
