With Thanksgiving just over two weeks away, the Syracuse Rescue Mission is urgently seeking help to meet an unprecedented demand for holiday meals. The organization, which has long provided meals to the homeless and those in need, has seen requests surge from 2,500 last year to nearly 4,000 this year. According to Syracuse.com, the loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits has contributed to the increase in demand.
The Rescue Mission is calling for monetary and food donations to ensure everyone can enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Monetary contributions are especially valuable as they allow the purchase of bulk items at a lower cost. However, donations of frozen turkeys and store-bought pies are also welcome. WSYR-TV reports that the organization needs 500 turkeys and 500 pies to meet its goal.
Volunteers are also needed to help pack and deliver meals on Thanksgiving Day. Those interested can sign up for volunteer opportunities online. The phone line for ordering Thanksgiving meals will close on November 14.
Operation: Drumstick, the Rescue Mission's annual initiative, aims to provide a hot, hearty meal to every neighbor in need. Each $3 donation provides a complete holiday meal for someone experiencing hunger or homelessness. Donations can be made through the Rescue Mission's website.
