The annual holiday supply drive has officially started in Central New York, aiming to support families in need during the festive season. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the initiative, which began on November 1 and will run through December 5. The drive collects toys, coats, school supplies, and non-perishable food items to distribute to underserved communities across the state.
In Syracuse, donations can be dropped off at the Senator John J. Hughes State Office Building on East Washington Street. This year, the drive has expanded to include food donations, addressing challenges faced by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to federal policy changes. SNAP supports nearly three million New Yorkers each month, many of whom are older adults, disabled, or children.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of generosity during the holiday season, stating, "Generosity is a core value of the holiday season. New York’s statewide Toy and Coat Drive offers an opportunity to give back to our communities when it’s needed most." The New York State Office of General Services has set up additional drop-off locations throughout the state, including in cities like Rochester, Poughkeepsie, Utica, Buffalo, Binghamton, Watertown, and New York City.
Donations collected by December 5 will be distributed to families in time for the holidays, ensuring that everyone can experience the joy of the season. For more information on drop-off locations and how to contribute, visit the NYS Holiday Drive information page.
