The Camillus Sportsman's Club in Camillus has temporarily closed its outdoor gun range following a cease-and-desist order issued by town officials. The closure comes amid an ongoing investigation into reports of bullets striking nearby homes. Camillus Police Chief Michael Schreyer noted that this issue has been on the town's radar since 2012. Town Attorney James Gascon stated that the bullets are believed to be coming from the gun club, as the affected homes are directly down-range from the facility.

Gascon explained that the town met with the club's leaders last week, but they refused to voluntarily shut down the range. Consequently, the town issued the cease-and-desist order to ensure the safety of local residents while the investigation continues. Chief Schreyer said, "Are there other people in the area that are shooting? Is it an appropriate hunting season? Do people target shoot elsewhere?" These are questions the investigation aims to address.

The town hopes the gun club will apply for a site plan review, which would involve public hearings and potentially lead to improved safety measures at the range. The President of the Camillus Sportsman's Club has declined to comment as the situation is being assessed. CNY Central reports that no injuries have been reported so far.
