The Syracuse City Council has approved a plan for a large housing development near the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. The project, led by the Albanese Organization, will create 260 affordable apartments for individuals with below-average incomes. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with the goal of completing the apartments by 2029.

According to Syracuse.com, the council unanimously voted to sell 23 hillside acres for the development. The apartments will be available to individuals earning between 50 and 80 percent of the area's median income, which ranges from $36,000 to $58,000. The project aims to provide affordable housing options for residents in need.

The Albanese Organization plans to start construction once state financing closes in December. The construction is anticipated to take between 30 and 36 months. The development is part of a broader effort to address housing affordability in Syracuse.
