Drivers in Syracuse should prepare for a long-term lane reduction on Interstate 81 starting today (Tuesday, October 28). The New York State Department of Transportation has announced that the northbound section of the highway will be reduced to one lane between Exit 17 (S Salina St/Brighton Ave) and Exit 18 (Adams Street/Harrison Street). This lane reduction is part of the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project and will last through November 25.
Crews will be working on excavation for the future Business Loop 81 northbound from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. The construction activities are weather-dependent and may change based on conditions. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously in work zones, as fines are doubled for speeding. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, repeated speeding violations in work zones could result in the suspension of a driver's license.
For the latest updates on road conditions, drivers can visit 511ny.org or use the 511NY mobile app. The I-81 Viaduct Project aims to improve the transportation system in Syracuse by enhancing safety and connectivity for the community.
