The four candidates vying to become the next mayor of Syracuse will participate in their final debate tonight at the Everson Museum. This event offers voters a chance to hear from Democrat Sharon Owens, Republican Tom Babilon, and independents Tim Rudd and Alfonso Davis. The debate comes ahead of early voting, which begins this weekend, with Election Day set for November 4.

Sharon Owens, currently serving as Deputy Mayor, emerged victorious in a contested Democratic primary earlier this year. Owens is running on a platform of continuing the progress made under Mayor Ben Walsh's administration. However, independent candidate Alfonso Davis, a community activist, argues that electing Owens would mean continuing an administration that he claims has neglected Syracuse's residents. Davis is running under the "Integrity Accountability Collaboration" ballot line.

Republican candidate Tom Babilon, a local lawyer, has criticized the Walsh administration for what he describes as inefficient spending. He believes there are numerous ways to cut the budget while still meeting the city's needs. Babilon has expressed a commitment to maintaining the Columbus Statue, a controversial issue in the community, and supports the transfer of land to the Onondaga Nation.

Independent candidate Tim Rudd, a former city budget director, emphasizes financial stewardship and transparent leadership. Rudd, who previously worked under Walsh and Owens, was fired earlier this year following a controversy over comments made on a podcast. He insists his firing was retaliatory and highlights the need for a shake-up in the city's leadership.

The debate will provide an opportunity for each candidate to outline their vision for Syracuse and address key issues such as budget management, public safety, and affordable housing. Free tickets for the debate are available through the Central Current website.
