Jurors in Utica are set to continue deliberating today in the trial of three former corrections officers accused of murdering inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility. The jury began their discussions on Wednesday (October 15) and continued through Thursday (October 16), but they have yet to reach a verdict.
The defendants, David Kingsley, Matthew Galliher, and Nicholas Kieffer, face charges of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter for their alleged roles in the fatal beating of Brooks on December 9, 2024. According to CNY Central, Brooks was transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy on the day of the incident. Bodycam footage reportedly shows officers punching, kicking, and lifting Brooks by the neck. He died the following day at 43 years old.
Special Prosecutor William Fitzpatrick described the guards' actions as a "dehumanization" and urged the jury to consider the evidence presented, including the silent bodycam footage. Defense attorneys argued that their clients acted in a chaotic situation and were not directly responsible for Brooks' death. ABC News reports that some defense lawyers claimed their clients were not among those who struck Brooks and that they were following orders.
The trial has drawn significant attention, with public outrage over the footage and calls for prison reform. If convicted, the former officers could face 25 years to life in prison. The jury's deliberations are expected to continue today, with a verdict anticipated soon.
