In Syracuse, the four candidates vying for the mayoral position participated in their first debate on Tuesday (October 14). The event featured Democrat Sharon Owens, Republican Tom Babilon, and independent candidates Tim Rudd and Alfonso Davis. The debate, held at WCNY and in partnership with Syracuse.com, focused on critical issues such as city finances, education, and housing.

Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens, who would be the first Black mayor of Syracuse if elected, faced numerous challenges from her opponents. According to the Daily Orange, Owens defended her record and the current administration, countering claims that she represents the status quo. She stated, "My very existence makes me as far away from the status quo as you can be."

The candidates also touched on national issues, including policies from President Donald Trump's administration, as reported by Syracuse.com. Each candidate presented their vision for Syracuse's future, emphasizing the need for change from the current leadership.

The debate, moderated by local media figures and academics, provided a platform for the candidates to articulate their plans for improving public safety, economic development, and overall quality of life in Syracuse. The general election is scheduled for November 4, with early voting beginning on October 25.
