Eight people are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross following a house fire on Valley Drive in Syracuse. The fire, which broke out on Tuesday (October 14), originated on a second-floor porch and was caused by a child playing with fire, according to the Syracuse Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they encountered heavy smoke and flames emanating from the back of the 2 1/2-story house. Crews managed to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes and declared it extinguished after about an hour. Thankfully, all residents, which included six adults and two children, were able to exit the building safely, and no injuries were reported.

The fire caused significant damage to the second floor, with water and smoke affecting the rest of the house. One resident was evaluated by paramedics on the scene but was released without needing further medical attention. Emergency services, including the Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, and National Grid, also responded to the incident.

The American Red Cross is providing emergency aid, including shelter, food, clothing, and emotional support to the displaced residents. The fire remains under investigation as authorities work to understand the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
