The New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) has announced an overnight closure of Interstate 81 northbound between Exit 16A and the East Glen Avenue on-ramp in Syracuse. The closure will occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights, starting Monday (October 13) through Saturday (October 18). This closure is necessary for bridge steel installation as part of the I-81 Viaduct Project.
Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour, which directs traffic from Exit 16A to I-481 north, then to Exit 1 (Brighton Avenue/Rock Cut Road), west on Rock Cut Road, north on East Brighton Avenue, and west on East Glen Avenue to rejoin I-81 northbound. The NYS DOT reminds drivers to exercise caution in the work zone and adhere to all traffic control devices, including signs and flaggers.
The construction activities are weather-dependent and may change based on conditions. The NYS DOT also warns that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones, and multiple speeding violations could result in the suspension of a driver's license. For more information, drivers can visit the NYS DOT website or call 511 for up-to-date travel information.
