The New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) has issued a travel advisory for Interstate 81 southbound in Syracuse today (September 25). The highway will be reduced to one lane between Exits 23A-23B-22 and Exit 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate bridge work as part of the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution when traveling through the work zone and to be mindful of all traffic control devices, including signs and flaggers. According to the NYS DOT, fines for speeding in work zones are doubled, and repeated violations could lead to a suspension of the driver’s license.
The construction activities are weather-dependent and may change based on conditions. Live traffic updates are available at 511ny.org. The advisory is part of a larger effort to improve infrastructure in the area, with additional overnight lane closures planned for I-81 southbound between Exit 17 and Exit 78 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. weeknights, beginning today and continuing through Saturday (September 27), as reported by LocalSYR.
