An arrest has been made in connection with a drive-by shooting in Syracuse that resulted in the death of Jakari Townsend and injured another man. David Herndon, 33, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after being spotted by detectives on Gifford Street on Monday (September 22). Herndon is currently held at the Onondaga County Justice Center, awaiting arraignment.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday (September 16) on Bellevue Avenue. According to CNY Central, officers responded to a report of shots fired and found Townsend, 26, with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where he later died. The second victim, a 25-year-old man, was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
The investigation led to the arrest of a second suspect, a 17-year-old male, who turned himself in with a parent at the Public Safety Building. Due to his age, authorities have not released his name. He is currently held at Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center.
Police are continuing their investigation and are seeking at least two other suspects. They urge anyone with information to contact the Syracuse Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 315-442-5222.
The investigation remains active, with detectives conducting interviews and executing search warrants to gather more evidence. As reported by Syracuse.com, the police are determined to bring all responsible parties to justice.
