Syracuse University's starting quarterback, Steve Angeli, will miss the rest of the 2025 season due to a torn Achilles tendon. The injury occurred during a non-contact play in the third quarter of Syracuse's 34-21 victory over Clemson on Saturday (September 20). An MRI confirmed the injury, which will require surgery, though a recovery timeline has not been announced.
Angeli, a first-year starter who transferred from Notre Dame, had been performing exceptionally well. He ranks second in the nation with 1,316 passing yards and has thrown 10 touchdown passes with only two interceptions. Before his injury, Angeli had passed for 244 yards and two touchdowns against Clemson.
Rickie Collins, an LSU transfer, will take over as the starting quarterback. Collins stepped in for Angeli during the Clemson game, completing 3-of-8 passes for 34 yards and a touchdown. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown expressed his support for Angeli, saying, "Steve will always be the leader of our football team." Syracuse is set to host Duke on Saturday (September 27), marking Collins' first career start.
Angeli is expected to apply for a medical redshirt, which would grant him two more years of eligibility. Despite the setback, Syracuse remains hopeful for the remainder of the season.
